Increasingly wet west & north, turning to snow on hills

Good morning,

Merry Christmas to all!

A mild south to southwesterly pattern influences England & Wales today - winds up to gale force around coasts in the west & south-west. Lighter winds and cooler for Scotland & Northern Ireland.

Widely 10 to 12C for much of England & Wales, but only 5 to 7C or below for much of Scotland & Northern Ireland. Temperatures will then fall quickly into the night, dipping toward freezing, especially in the north & west.

Dry for most of daylight for the Midlands, south & east of England, with a little sunshine toward the east, but many places will be cloudy.

A frontal system lies across the west & north, with persistent rain for southern Scotland, north-west England and eastern Ireland. A cold front will advance eastwards later, bringing a spell of heavy rain and squally winds for all of England and Wales during the evening.

Snow will fall across high ground in central & southern Scotland, later falling to increasingly low levels as fronts pull away eastwards dragging in increasingly colder air. Wintry showers will affect the Pennines into the night.
