Mixed overall

Issued: 0900 Tuesday 6th February 2018
Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

A chilly and mixed week with rain, sleet and snow

The cold weather continues through the coming week, although it probably won't be as chilly as it has been. There will be bands of rain, sleet and some early snow passing eastwards with ridges of high pressure building from time to time too. Overnight frosts are likely, some of these severe. A tendency for windier weather to occur.

Friday 9/2/18
A weak front clears eastern parts of England on Friday morning, taking any rain, sleet and snow with it. Following from the west will be drier and brighter weather, although some showers affecting more western coasts and hills. Some low cloud and drizzle in the far west of Scotland. Another cold day at 2 to 4C for most.

Saturday 10/2/18
A widespread frost on Saturday morning as a ridge of high pressure builds through England and Wales. Increasing winds over Scotland and Ireland ahead of a frontal system moving in from the Atlantic. This will be bringing rain, some of it heavy with a risk of gales in Sotland and northern England as the rain bands moves eastwards. The rain lighter as it reaches eastern England. Heavy showers follow into western Scotland and western Ireland, turning to sleet and snow as colder air returns in western Scotland. Highs at a slightly milder 4 to 7C.

Sunday 11/2/18
A westerly flow on Sunday bringing some sunny spells for many areas at first. However, showers and rain in western Scotland and Ireland will be edging east through the day. This turns to snow as it reaches northern England and Wales, eventually moving into the Midlands and reaching southern and eastern England by evening. Highs at 2C in northern Scotland, 7C in southern England.

Monday 12/2/18
A ridge of high pressure building through the UK and Ireland on Monday bringing a widespread frost. It will be dry and bright with sunny spells fior most, although some cloud and drizzle reaching western Scotland and western Ireland. Highs at 3 to 6C.

Tuesday 13/2/18
A ridge of higher pressure builds again on Tuesday. This brings bright conditions with some sunny spells. Windier weather with rain affecting the west of Scotland and Ireland. Highs at 3 to 6C.

Wednesday 14/2/18
Windy and wet weather may pass east at first on Wednesday. Brighter weather then follows from the west bringing a mix of sunshine and showers, these heavy in the west. Highs at 4 to 7C.
