Week ahead - May 20, 2018
Mainly fair and warm
Local showers

Issued: 0900hrs Sunday 20th May 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Wind typically easterly - warmest in west

The week ahead maintains plenty of dry weather as high pressure stays nearby. A few localised heavy showers may pop up over southern Britain early in the week, otherwise a dry theme continues. An easterly breeze may draw in cloud off the North Sea on some days, and will make coasts rather cool. Warmest temperatures later this week will be found around western coasts to the lee of high ground.

Wednesday 23/05/18
High pressure will be centred over the Norwegian Sea, promoting an easterly flow across the British Isles. The strongest breeze is likely to affect southern areas. Dry overall, with good amounts of sunshine. A little fair-weather cloud may come and go. Small chance of a local shower for southern England by afternoon. Temperatures reaching 19 to 22C for most inland areas, locally warmer, but nearer 16C on many coasts, or just 13C in the north-east.

Thursday 24/05/18
Little overall change, with an easterly flow across the country. Generally dry, with just a chance of local showers in the south. Southern counties may hold onto rather cloudy skies, whilst northern areas should see plenty of sunshine. Breezy for many places - least wind in Scotland. Feeling fresh on eastern coasts, just 13 to 16C. Highs of 17 to 21C inland. Also reaching the low 20s in western Scotland.

Friday 25/05/18
An easterly pattern continues. Broadly dry weather with broken cloud and sunshine. Eastern coasts stay cool, and banks of low cloud may come inland from the North Sea. A fresh breeze again for many areas. Warmest in sheltered western areas. Tempertures ranging from 14 to 23C from east to west, top values likely to be western Scotland and west Wales.

Saturday 26/05/18
High pressure is expected to stay focused toward the north, meaning little change as we head into the Bank Holiday weekend. Lots of dry and bright weather. Sunniest and warmest in the west. A fresh breeze, probably strongest in the south. Highs 14 to 22C.

Sunday 27/05/18
A similar pattern again, with an easterly breeze influencing the country. Most likely dry with good amounts of sun. Some murk possible in the east, where it stays quite cool. Warm around western coasts. Highs 14 to 23C.

Monday 28/05/18
Subtle changes may turn the wind slightly more north-easterly, which may bring more cloud across the country. A chance of showers moving into southern areas, but confidence of detail is very low. Highs 13 to 22C.
