Thundery showerssouth
Fair to north

Issued: 0900 Wednesday 23rd May 2018
Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

Fine north, few thundery showers to the south, warm as wel but a chillier east coast

A mixed week of weather ahead with dry conditions holding in much of Scotland and the northern half of Ireland, but thundery showers or rain causing a problem for forecasting elsewhere. It is likely become warm away from eastern coasts where the winds will be making it feel cool. Perhaps an increasing risk of thundery showers or rain in England, Wales and eastern ireland towards the middle to later stages of the week.

Saturday 26/5/18
High pressure drifts north of Scotland on Saturday with an easterly flow through the UK and Ireland. Broken cloud for much of England and Wales with some morning drizzle on hills. These fade to leave mostly dry weather with some bright or sunny spells. Dry with sunshine in much of Scotland and Northern Ireland. An area of rain, some of it thundery, could pass through southwest England and into southern Ireland during Saturday morning and afternoon. Highs at a very warm 26C in any sunshine in southeast England, 24C in western Scotland, 22C in western Ireland but cooler along North Sea coasts because of the stiff east breeze at 17C.

Sunday 27/5/18
High pressure is to the north of the UK and Ireland with low pressure ot the south on Sunday. There will be an easterly flow affecting all areas, but again the difficulty with the forecast is predicting the risk of some thundery showers. It does seem that these are likely to be developing over central, southern and southwest England through Sunday, extending into Wales and eastern Ireland. Other areas are likely to be dry with some sunshine, the best of this in Scotland. Highs to a very warm 26C in southern England, 24C in western Scotland, 22C in Ireland and 18C along eastern coasts.

Holiday Monday 28/5/18
High pressure stays to the northeast on Monday with low pressure to the south. The easterly flow brings the threat of some thundery showers to southern Ireland, south Wales and the far south of England. Elsewhere it should be dry with good spells of sunshine and will be feeling warm too. Highs at 21 to 26C.

Tuesday 29/5/18
Pressure may fall close to the south of England on Tuesday. This allows for an increased threat of thunderstorms in the south. An isolated shower in southern Ireland too. For most other areas it should be dry although isolated showers could form on the hills of Wales and northern England. Highs at 21 to 25C.

Wednesday 30/5/18
A band of thundery showers or some rain may extend through central, eastern and southern England on Wednesday, although note that confidence is low. There will be dry weather and sunshine to the north. Highs around 18C in the thundery showers ot the south, 24C in western Ireland and western Scotland.

Thursday 31/5/18
Lower pressure is expected to be over the south again on Thursday with higher pressure to the north. There is the risk of some thundery showers across England, Wales and Ielajnd with brighter weather in Scotland. Highs at 19 to 25C.
